Chicks on Beat NO.10.This is the final issue of this popular Series.We end our Global Tour throughout the World of of Yé-yé Girls in Japan.The Ventures, America's favorite instrumental rock band, launched a tour of Japan in 1965, creating an electric rock frenzy that shook up the entire Japanese music industry.Chiyo Okumura had a huge Hit with her Vocal version of The Ventures' "Hokkaido Skies".She,often was compared to french sixties Export No.1 Silvie Vartan,became a huge Star with her Sex Vibeded Songs.Akiko Wada,the tough Lady of Soul in Japan.She was often called the Japanese Aretha Franklin.Her strong & expressive Voice as well as her tall and solidly-built physique brought her the reputation of a Though Chick.Maki Asakawa,the mysterious dark Blues & Jazz Singer that became a big part of japanese Psychedelia. Emy Jackson was born in Essex, England,she spend her teenage years in Yokohama.Being capable of speaking English & Japanese fluently bought a Job as a Radio DJ and a Record Deal at the CBS imprint, a label for foreign Artists.Crying in the Storm was the first in String of hits in the mid Sixties.I hope you enjoyed our little excursion into the World of Girl Pop.Percy

Chicks on Beat NO.9.During the last ten years of General Franco's regime, the dictator's grip on Spanish culture and society was loosening quickly. As Spain's population celebrated their new freedoms, and popular culture was given room to grow, young women across the country were casting off their long Spanish names, replacing them with short, catchy new ones, and enthusiastically throwing themselves into the world of song.This new generation of female vocalists enchanted the nation through sound and image. And while absorbing the musical repertoire of their counterparts in Britain, America, and the vast European continent, the ladies of Spain maintained a sound that was inherently Spanish.The famous Spanish singer/movie-star Concha Velasco helped define the "Ye-Yé girl" as a pop-culture icon in her smash hit of 1965, "La Chica Ye-Yé." As the lyrics explain, a Ye-Yé girl has "mucho ritmo" (lots of rhythm) and sings "en inglés, con el pelo alborotado, y las medias de color" (in English, with messed-up hair and colored socks).Despite the numerous influences, the Spanish flavor was clearly audible on the records. The rhythms, the dark tinge of gypsy scales, and a recurring sense of drama and passion represent the telltale ingredients of the Spanish sound.Que se diviertan

Chicks on Beat NO.5.In the early '60s, Germany was still trying to come to terms with its past.The Split between East & West Germany was the overall Topic of the following Years.But with the post-war economic miracle the german Youth was eager for foreign Pop Culture.German record companies refused to hear the call for something more hip, and continued to force-feed schmaltzy, high camp fare to their Artists.While most of the younger german Artists turn their Heads overseas,a lot of foreign Artists discover Germany as a marketplace for their Music.In the 60's nearly every european and a lot U.S. Artists sang their Hits in german.From France Gall,Petula Clark,Milva,Dusty Dringfield to Majorplayers like Johnny Cash.So there was only room for a few german Singers to reach for international Standards or even cross the Boarders to the rest of the World.Most have to stuck with a kind of low-grade pop lite that gave German music a bad name.Here are a very few that were granted access to the catalogue of cool.Viel Spaß

Chicks on Beat NO.4.This Time we're visiting Great Britain.The U.K. is the other big Center of Pop Culture as we know it.After dealing with the Consequences of the 2nd World War,Britains Youth started a Revolution whose impact we are feeling today.Mary Quant created the Miniskirt and conquered the World with her Model Twiggy.Richard Lester shot "The Knack … and How to Get It".Sandie Shaw won the Eurovision Song Contest.Beatles,Stones,The Who,you know them all.Here are some other female Representatives of British Beat.With Jackie Trent who is better known for her Songwriting with her Husband "The Great" Tony Hatch,than for her singing.Witch is a real shame because she has superb Voice.She wrote a lot Songs for Petula Clark.For some unfair Reasons Miss Clark has a rather campy Reputation.Best known for her Über Hit"Downtown",Petula Clark has much more to offer.I recommend a rediscovery.Of course we have the greatest white Voice ever,Dusty Springfield.Another underestimated Singer is Cilla Black.She is mostly seen as second best Dusty,which is totally unfair.She is represented with one of favourite sad Love Songs of all Time.Enjoy this little Trip back into Swingin' London.If you want a second Part,then leave a Comment.

Chicks on Beat NO.2:Japan pt.1.Welcome to Yé-yé Girls Asian Style.The Beat Fever hit Asia in the Mid-Sixties after a Tour of US Surf Band "The Ventures".The Band took Asia by Storm and started an Avalanche of Surf/Big Beat Bands.You will hear their Influnce more in later editions when we visit Singapore & Thailand.A lot of the mostly instrumental Bands took female Singers to spice up their Perfomances.With the growing popularity of Yé-yé Girls,France Gall had a huge Hit with her japanese version of Poupée de cire, poupée de son,Japan developed the proto Type of what know as female J-Pop Today.Most of the Artists are better known for their acting then for their singing.Wrongfully i think.More about them in Part 2.Next Stop:The UK.

Chicks on Beat:Les filles et le beat

This the 1st Number of a New Series called "Chicks on Beat".It's dedicated to the only musical movement so far to be spearheaded by Females.The Yé-yé Girls.It has it's origin in a french Radioshow called "Salut les copains" in 1959.The program became an immediate success and one of its sections ("le chouchou de la semaine" / "this week's sweetheart") turned to be the starting point for most yé-yé singers.
For the first Time the Artists were the same Age as their Audience.France Gall(16)&
Françoise Hardy not much older become Rolemodels for a new Generation.Soon it became a European phenomenon.For "serious" Chanson Singers like Gilbert Bécaud and Charles Aznavour,yé-yé was more of a disdain.It is also a Markstone for Youth Culture as we know it.Asia developed,of course,it's own Version.More about that in the next Edition
